Judy's Quick Takes for October 29, 2009

1) There is something so beautiful about small town love. As we were welcomed along with other new parishioners in our Church Hall this past Sunday...we were served a delicious breakfast and warmly welcomed by so many long-standing people from the community. One woman has been there at St. Peter's for 79 years...many others had similar stories...they were Baptized there, their children were as well...and now grand and great-grand children were doing the same...such history, such continuity, such longevity, such connections, such tradition, SUCH LOVE...these people truly LOVE their parish and they opened the doors and their own hearts to welcome US as FAMILY. It occurred to me as I sat and listened to these elders...I don't see much of that anymore in the big world...I don't see people who have been in ONE place, and have voted in more than 15 different presidents, still volunteering to make Apple Dumplings each year for the Fair...still lectoring at Mass, still ironing the Altar cloths...there is something very sacred in the quaint, yet elegant beauty of these people.

2) I've received some emails expounding upon the medicinal properties of ONIONS. I read stories of onions saving the lives of many during the Plague and Influenza epidemics of long ago.
Those knowledgeable about the topic tell me to place unpeeled onions in bowls in all the rooms of the house...a family on the Frontier who had done this were one of the only farms not to take sick with the FLU...upon examining the onions under a microscope, the doctor found that the onions themselves had absorbed the flu virus, leaving the residents of the house healthy!!! Another person near death had sliced onions placed upon the soles of his feet and covered with white cotton socks...and still another stabbed a fork into a peeled white onion and set the fork down in a jar near the sickbed...In both cases, when the patients awakened in the morning, the onions were BLACK and filled with germs and the people were well on the way to recovery! With all that is going on these days regarding illness and H1N1...I figure there is no loss in trying some of these age-old traditions.

3) Looking forward to the special times ahead in November and December. I can't wait to see all of the lovely crafts and delicious recipes, and well-loved traditions and customs of my fellow blogging friends! If you have some good ideas, stop by benmakesten and share them with me! THANKS!

4) I have heard MORE THAN A FEW unemployed people state that they enjoy the unemployment benefits they are receiving and that they are making more money that way than in gaining new employment and thus are not planning to actively seek work, but will "milk" this state money for as long as they can.... I DO NOT UNDERSTAND THIS MINDSET! Call me OLD...but I was raised in a hard-working, uncomplaining, willing to do ANY job that was a job no matter if they liked it or not family...and my poor grand-fathers (rest their souls) would NOT take kindly to this new way of "earning money". Now I completely understand those who have lost their jobs and are in need of sustaining their family in the interim of finding a new one...however, part of receiving unemployment is the stipulation that while receiving it, you will ACTIVELY PURSUE NEW EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES...I even know people who have laid themselves off from their own companies so the can sit back and collect a check each month...someone help me out here...WHERE ARE THE ETHICS?

5) That said, I am SO thankful for my husband's job, and for our at-home business website that we built through SBI online. We have everything we need to provide for our family and I realize how blessed we truly are. We pray each evening for those who are out of work and when those people are part of our circle of family or friends, we do our best to help them.

6) The movie "Last Chance Harvey" keeps being recommended to me. Usually, when I am approached with a "You've just gotta' see this movie" pitch, I end up turning that same video off within ten minutes of starting it...I just don't typically see eye-to-eye with the norm as far as what is considered worthwhile viewing I guess. But with LCH, some people whose opinions I really respect have given it a thumbs up...so I thought I'd ask you today: Has anyone seen this film? If so, what did you think? Should I rent it?

7) When "boys" that I loved like my own sons, drove all around town for teen outings, fed at my table for years and welcomed to slumber here at night, eating ice-cream, playing cards, watching movies, and running around outside playing flash-light tag, are now getting married and raising families...I become WELL-AWARE at the quick passage of time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We just moved into a smallish town (well, more like a small townish). I'm doing some work and recently called a woman about it, she asked "Do I know you?" -- I had to confess to being new to the area, but thought it funny that she thought she probably knew me since I had a phone number in her code.

I am a huge lover of home remedy stuff, have you read any of the things at the Blind Pig and the Acorn? And onions might work. But. . . did they have electron microscopes in the 1860s? Think that part of the story might be a little add-on. . .

Have you really heard people say that about unemployment? Golly. I'd sure beieve people might think it, in the same situation I might be tempted to it myself, but what a strange place we're at when people feel free to say such a thing out loud! I just had a long conversation on my blog about unemployment rate numbers, if a person has a job, any job, even a $10 a week job, they don't get counted as unemployed for our official unemployment rate. To me that makes the number really off for just the reason you state -- anyone out of work grasps at any job they can get. We've got part-time income coming in here from four different jobs/businesses, but it runs at about 1/4 of our income from before.

Very glad you have security and things are going well for you, I also feel very grateful not to be in the place some folks are in right now.

Hello TWOWAYSOFRENOUNCINGTHEDEVIL and WELCOME to A THANKFUL WOMAN'S BOOK OF BLESSINGS! GLAD TO HAVE YOU WITH US!
Thanks for mentioning that tidbit on microscopes...it struck me when I read the story...but thought that my OWN timeline of such inventions must be faulty...you have inspired me to further digging on that detail now!
Sadly, YES...not only have I heard those comments from NUMEROUS people OUT LOUD...but said with a certain pride/arrogance as though it is some great achievement on their part.
GOD BLESS YOUR FAMILY....FOUR JOBS!!!!
WHAT ENERGY and FORTITUDE...you are in inspiration!!!! Thanks for visiting...I hope it's the first of many for you!

Wow, that is just amazing. The closest I've heard was years ago, when someone said they might as well draw unemployment since they'd paid into it so many years. Maybe the thinking will go the way of social security, not a safety net but a savings account to draw on later?

Oh, now, let me be clear, we're not working hard at anything. No fortitude here, or inspiration. I just mean we, like many others, are trying to make a living in patchwork style.

Thanks for the welcome, I enjoy checking by once or twice a week!
